Terrain As I said before the Panhandle resembles Kansas more than most other regions of Texas, with the Kansas border being only 80 miles from our headquarters. From terrain, vegetation, visibility, deer body sizes, antler mass, deer habits, to deer densities. These differences call for different hunting tactics and setups than the traditional South Texas hunting styles. We do not hunt from high racked vehicles or set on senderos with limited visibility for hours on end.
Tactics And Setups Most of our White-Tail country consists of concentrated cover along creeks and rivers. Most deer travel along this cover and its fringes making them fairly patternable. Typically these creeks and rivers will be hunted from two man ground blinds overlooking a feeder placed in high traffic areas. Some setups will consist of a ground blind set up on food plot edges or on travel corridors between feeding and bedding areas. Typical shots from these setups will be 100-200yds, but due to the open terrain there will often be shot opportunities 200-400yds. Another common setup we use is to setup on farm field edges next to CRP fields. This tactic usually consists of setting up on field edges in the morning and evening , and spot and stalk hunting for bedded deer midday. This is a very exciting hunt.
Properties Most of our White-Tail properties range from 2,000 to 10,000 acres. We rarely take more than one deer for every 1,000 acres to insure plenty of mature deer. This low pressure also insures a very huntable deer herd that is not as spooky and nocturnal as most. All hunts are completely free range with no high fences.
What Can I Expect ? As with all of our hunts there is no guarantee, no high fences or weather machine. I can guarantee that everyone here at 4F will do everything we can to insure that you have a fun, memorable, and productive hunt. All of our properties are intensely managed for trophy deer, in hopes of every hunter having opportunity at a mature deer. Opportunity at a deer that will score 140"+ gross B&C is a realistic expectation and is our goal for all of our hunters. Again this is not a guarantee, but we have had 95%+ of our hunters, that held out the length of the hunt, in the last 5 years connect with 140"+ deer. Our average for 2005 was 152". Average live weight for a mature Panhandle White-Tail is around 200lbs., with several deer each year weighing over 250lbs. and occasionally one over 300lbs.
What’s Included ? Our 5 day trophy White-Tail hunt includes meals, lodging, 1x1 guide, skinning , caping of head. One guide is provided for each hunter and will accompany them at all times while hunting. Hunters will not be dropped off at a stand and left there.
Lodging consists of a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, two story house with a big gathering area down stairs. We rent our lodge during the summer for family reunions, church retreats, and even as a quiet getaway for couples. It is certainly nice enough to bring the spouse along.
